Handcrafted on the wild Beara Peninsula since 1978
Ireland’s original modern farmhouse cheese — rich, complex, and full of the Atlantic spirit
Milleens is a soft to semi-soft washed-rind cheese made from the milk of Friesian cows grazing the rugged pastures of the Beara Peninsula in West Cork.
The rind is a beautiful mottled peach to fiery orange. Inside you’ll find a smooth, buttery paste that develops deeper, more complex flavours — floral, herbal, and earthy — as it matures.
"Rich, floral taste… real depth and body… wonderful pink orangey rind."
- Juliet Harbutt
Milleens washed-rind cheese from West Cork
Buttery, mild, smooth and lactic
Complex notes of wild flowers, hay, herbs and the sea
Crisp whites, farmhouse cider, or Belgian-style ales
In 1975, Norman and Veronica Steele moved to Milleens on the Beara Peninsula with their young daughter Susan. In 1976 they began making cheese — creating Ireland’s first modern farmhouse cheese.
Today, the tradition continues on the same family farm. Every wheel is still handmade using traditional brine-washing methods in small batches, tied to the seasons and the wild Atlantic landscape.
